Model

A model is a mathematical description of a system or a process. There are many categories of mathematical models; actor based models allow us to simulate goods being transported across Europe, explicit models are used when we know the input parameters and want to calculate the outputs, and implicit models allows us to do the opposite; given the outputs we can calculate the input parameters.

It contains a set of parameters and mathematical equations related to each other, in order to describe the behavior of such process or system. Model may be static or dynamic.

Static models are used for systems in equilibrium. Relationships in the model are constant. Models have closed form mathematical solition.

Dynamic models account for time-dependent changes in the state of the system.Dynamic models typically are represented by differential equations.

When using the Ecolego ODE toolbox, a model consisting of several interconnected compartments is equivalent to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODE).
