Soil Model

A model for soil which can be used alone, or together with one or more plant models. The model is split up into three sub-models

  • The root zone of the plant
  • The unsaturated zone.
  • The (total) water budget of the soil

Combining with plant models

When using this model together with plant models, the requirement is

  1. The soil characteristics is the same for all plants. For example the soil density.
  2. Important: the height of the root zone is the same for all plants.

The plant and soil models are naturally closely related, which means that information must be sent back and forth between these models.

Examples:

  • The surface of the soil is determined by calculating the total area for all the plant models.
  • Irrigation:
    • The soil model knows when irrigation is needed (when the water budget is below the wilting point).
    • The plant model(s) know when there are plants growing in the field and whether a specific plant requires irrigation (fruit and grass do not).
    • When the field is irrigated, some of the contaminants in the water used for irrigation is intercepted by the leaves of the plant.
    • Irrigation should occur when there are plants growing that requires irrigation. The contaminants not intercepted by the leaves should continue down to the top soil.

The user typically do not need to deal with these interactions - the software will help with the connections between soil and plants. However, the list of inputs and outputs is somewhat confusing.

Inputs

  • C_gas_atm: (Organic model only) The concentration in gaseous atmosphere. Given by the atmosphere model.
  • C_water: The concentration in the water used to irrigate the soil. Given by the freshwater model.
  • Deposition_dry_aero_intercepted: The quantity per day of dry deposition intercepted by plants. When several plant models are connected to this model, the sum of the intercepted quantity is used. Given by plants.
  • Deposition_dry_aero_per_m2: The quantity per day of deposition from dry aerosol. Given by the atmosphere model.
  • Deposition_wet_aero_intercepted: The quantity per day of wet deposition intercepted by plants. When several plant models are connected to this model, the sum of the intercepted quantity is used. Given by plants.
  • Deposition_wet_aero_per_m2: The quantity per day of deposition from wet aerosol. Given by the atmosphere model.
  • Deposition_wet_gas_per_m2: Wet deposition of gaseous pollutant washed out in rainwater during precipitation and deposited on soil. Given by the atmosphere model.
  • Irrigation_applied: Rate of water used to irrigate the fields. Given by the plant models.
  • Irrigation_cont_rate_intercepted: The contribution from irrigation which has been intercepted by plants. When several plants have been connected to the soil model, the sum of the intercepted irrigation is used. Given by the plant models.
  • Rain: The amount of precipitation. Given by the atmosphere model.
  • S_field: The surface area of the soil. When connected to plant models, the area of the soil is the sum of each plant field. Given by the plant models.
  • T_soil_celsius: (Organic model only) The temperature of the soil. This connection must be made manually.

Outputs

  • Diffusion_downwards: (Organic model only) The rate of contaminants leaving the soil via diffusion. Used by the atmosphere model.
  • Diffusion_upwards: (Organic model only) The rate of contaminants entering the atmosphere via diffusion. Used by the atmosphere model.
  • f_OC: (Organic model only) Fraction of organic carbon in soil. Used by the plant models.
  • G_soil: (Organic model only) Air content in soil. Used by the plant models.
  • h_root: The height of the root zone. Used by the plant models.
  • K_air_water: (Organic model only) Partition coefficient air water. Used by the plant models.
  • K_octanol_water: (Organic model only) Partition coefficient octanol water. Used by the plant models.
  • K_soil_water: (Organic model only) Partition coefficient soil water. Used by the plant models.
  • Q_soil: The total quantity of contaminants in the root zone layer. Used by plant models.
  • Recharge: The quantity of contaminants per day recharged to the ground water. Used by the fresh water model.
  • Wash_off: The quantity of contaminants per day washed off the surface soil to the fresh water. Used by the fresh water model.
  • Rho_soil_dry: The dry weight density of the soil. Used by plant models.
  • Rho_soil_wet: (Organic model only) The wet weight density of the soil. Used by plant models.
  • Wash_off: The quantity of contaminants per day washed off the surface soil to the fresh water. Used by the fresh water model.
  • Water_budget_deficit: The amount of irrigation needed per day in order to stay above W_p.
  • T_soil_celsius: (Organic model only) The temperature of the soil. This connection must be made manually.
  • W_soil: (Organic model only) Water content in soil. Used by the plant models.
